Fjallabyggð is a municipality in the
northern part of Iceland. It was created in 2006 when the inhabitants of the
two town communities Siglufjörður and Ólafsfjörður voted to combine the two
municipalities in one. The municipality is currently the home of 2.261
inhabitants, 1.357 in Siglufjörður and 923 in Ólafsfjörður. The two towns are primarily
built around the fish industry and related services. Today other industries,
such as the building of fire-engines, ambulances, boats and machines for fish
trawlers have started to gain foothold in Fjallabyggð.
The area of Fjallabyggð is situated on the magnificent peninsula "Tröllaskagi" that with its high mountains and deep fjords is perfect for outdoor activities such as hiking and bird watching and renowned for its beauty. For example, the deserted valley "Héðinsfjörður" is a popular hiking destination amongst the locals. In the summer time you can watch the midnight sun dance on the horizon without ever setting fully, and in the wintertime you can experience fantastic northern lights on the clear night sky.
